Week 2

Dear 2B Families,
Welcome to Week 2.

NOTIFICATIONS
Do you know what SLANT means? It is an acronym for a list of traits that define active participation in the classroom setting. I use it as a tool to objectively measure engagement and to encourage initiative, responsibility, and polite discourse.  Here is what it stands for:
Sitting up
Listening politely
Asking and answering questions
Nodding head (in agreement)
Tracking the speaker
Please encourage your young scholar to participate fully in class. Would you like to know how your scholar is measuring up to these standards on a day-to-day basis? As a teacher, I like to keep track of student participation on a site called ClassDojo. This is a platform for managing behavior in the classroom. I use it to track student participation. I award points (positive or negative) to students at different instances when they exhibit SLANT or any of the nine core virtues we espouse here at Archway Arete. It is useful to create a log of difference instances to see how a student's behavior and participation are trending. I don't usually share this log with students, but I can see how sharing it with parents could be a great way to improve school to home communication. I will be sending email invitations to you at some point this week. You will be given instructions for downloading the ClassDojo app or visiting the website and accessing your child's record. You will be able to message me on ClassDojo with any questions or concerns you have about your child's participation throughout the year and see in real-time how your child is measuring up.

HOMEWORK
Homework will begin to be evaluated using my very own CAN rubric. C stands for Completeness, A stands for Accuracy, and N stands for Neatness. I guess I like acronyms! I will be giving you a more thorough idea of what this means very soon, either in a blog post or at the latest, on Curriculum Night.
Remember, your child should be reading 20 minutes each day for homework (at least 5 of those minutes should be aloud). Eventually, leveled readers will be sent home for students to read, but for now please help your child find material he or she can read at least semi-independently. If you need any assistance or support from me, please do not hesitate to ask. Initial your child's planner to verify his or her reading and to also acknowledge spelling and math homework. I or Ms. Cloward will also be initialing planners, but not every day, so if you leave us a note in the planner, our response may be delayed. Email is the best option for a quick response.

MATH
In math we are continuing our review of place value and counting. Wednesday we have our first quiz! Tuesday night's homework will mirror what is to be expected, so your child will have a chance to familiarize themselves with what is to be expected. Encourage your child to re-check their answers and work on good quiz taking skills like process of elimination!
Poetry
This week we are focusing on the second stanza of Bed in Summer by Robert Louis Stevenson. Please look for a copy of the poem in your child's homework folder. The recitation rubric is on the back. Students should have this poem memorized and ready for recitation by the end of next week. Please help your child prepare so that they can recite with confidence!

LITERATURE
We are loving Charlotte's Web! This week we are reading chapters 4-7. Students will be writing chapter summaries and looking at the following vocabulary words from the story: trough, glutton, goslings, salutations, near-sighted, bloodthirsty, scruples, compunctions, untenable.

SPELLING
We have 20 spelling words this week. Students can only be successful on their Spalding spelling homework with your help. As you help your child complete his spelling homework each week, kindly remove the list from the lined sheet of paper and dictate each word one at a time and in order. If your child spells the word correctly the first time, they will only write it once. If he/she misspells the word, he/she will need to write the word correctly three times before going on. Thanks for your cooperation!

GRAMMAR & WRITING
This week for Grammar, we learn the noun jingle and the verb jingle. Students will be looking at synonym and antonym pairs, as well as some capitalization rules.
Writing looks very similar from week to week. Second graders will read a narrative passage, summarize it, copy exemplar sentences, and then write them from dictation. This week's narrative passage is from L. Frank Baum's The Patchwork Girl of Oz.

HISTORY
We will continue exploring maps and globes this week, comparing them as well as zooming in on land features that create Earth's beautiful landscape. Students will learn about volcanos, mountains, valleys, prairies, coasts, deserts, and oases. Please review these terms at home and see if you can spot any interesting landforms in the neighborhood! Students should be able to tell you the names of their continent, country, state and city. They should also be able to tell you directions on a map and identify the continents, major oceans, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, as well as the poles. We will also be assigning the Island Poster project, due on Monday, September 9.

SCIENCE
Our scientists will review what they learned in 1st grade about the four seasons of the year. They will understand that the seasons are caused by Earth's tilt and it's revolution around the sun. We will be using the globe and a lamp to model and investigate how this works. Students will understand that each season has special characteristics. We will also explore how each season affects plants, animals, and humans.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Dill
