Dear 2B Families,

Here is our second grade week:

LITERATURE
We are reading Chapters 20-22 of Charlotte’s Web this week. We will continue to discuss humility, but will also find out how humility is related to friendship.  Here are the vocabulary words we will look at: triumph, supernatural, unconscious, desolation, monkeyshine, mimicked, hallowed, pledge, garrulous.

SPELLING
There are 20 spelling words this short week. On Tuesday, we will spell catch, catcher, kitchen, butcher, black, warm, unless, clothing, clothes, clothe. On Wednesday, we spell began, begin, begun, able, gone, go, done, do, suit, track.  Please continue to dictate each word one and at time to your child as he or she practices them each evening. Ask your child to tell you when and where we use “ck” in a word.

POETRY
Your child should have “Something Told the Wild Geese” memorized by the end of the week. We begin recitations on Wednesday by invitation. Please refer to the recitation rubric to help your child prepare to recite with confidence.

WRITING
Our focus in has been to practice writing short summaries of passages from Charlotte’s Web, and that continues to be our focus. Students will receive a special assignment to write a summary of a passage from Charlotte’s Web. This assignment will be part of our end of the book celebrations this following week. Our copywork  includes two sentences, a question followed by an exclamation.

GRAMMAR
We have a grammar test this week on the five parts of a complete sentence, capitalization and punctuation rules, and synonyms and antonyms. Ask your child to sing their favorite grammar jingle to you!

MATH
We are beginning renaming with addition! This week we will slowly be adding the ones, tens, and hundreds. It is extremely important that your child is practicing those math facts! A fun little car ride game can be random "fast facts" or adding and subtracting items when out shopping (six oranges plus 7 apples, etc.)! Special note: Please only do the assigned workbook pages, do not go ahead!

HISTORY
We are continuing our study of Ancient India next week. We are very excited to learn about the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali. Your child will also learn about how Siddhartha became Buddha. Ask your child to retell you the story of Buddha this week.

SCIENCE
Your child will become a lepidopterist (person who studies butterflies)! We will learn about the butterfly life cycle next week after we finish up our work on frog lifecycles. You can review all the life cycles we've studied so far with your child (chicken, frog, butterfly).
