Here is what your second grader will be up to this week:
SPALDING
This week we have only 20 spelling words, it being a shorter week. On Tuesday, we spell
spell, poor, finish, hurt, maybe, across, tonight, tenth, sir, these,
and those. On Wednesday, we spell club, seen, see, felt, full, fail, setting, set,
and stamp.
LITERATURE
We are more than halfway through Charlotte’s Web!
We are taking a vocabulary quiz this week on the words we study in
chapters 8-14. Your second grader is learning some challenging words
this year. These words are used in our book and are
integral to comprehension. Students will review vocab with a fun
gestures game! We will read chapters 14 and 15 this week. Additional
vocabulary include
fibs, miraculous, incessant, reputation, modest, versatile.
POETRY
The second stanza of “Something
Told the Wild Geese” is our focus. We will be reviewing the poem each
day in class. Please help you child work on memorizing this beautiful
poem!
GRAMMAR
Your child is learning to edit! We are using
capitalization and punctuation rules to help us correct errors in
sentences. These editing skills should transfer to your child’s writing.
Please encourage your young scholar to properly capitalize
and punctuate as they write. These skills will last a lifetime!
WRITING
This week we continue to narrate portions of Charlotte’s Web
and examine an exemplary sentence from this wonderful piece of literature.
MATHEMATICS
This week we are reviewing topics that we have been learning the first
month of school! We will be reviewing place value, how to solve word
problems, and addition/subtraction facts. Encourage your child to also
practice their addition and subtraction
facts to boost their fluency!
HISTORY
Next week, your child will take their first test covering Geography and the Americas. Watch for a study
guide coming home on Wednesday. Please help your child study. The
test will be similar to the study guide. They will have to label the
continents and the major countries of North America. Also, please
remember that the Island
Project is due September 9.
SCIENCE
The seasons quiz is on Thursday. Please help your child study next week using the study
guide that comes home today.
