LITERATURE
We read chapters 1 and 2 of The Boxcar Children this week. Please send this book to school if you haven’t already done so. Your second grade scholar will be learning how to make inferences and how to identify important character traits. He or she will be discussing alertness and courage as they relate to the story. We will be studying the following vocabulary words: cross, cake, haystack, pump.
WRITING
We complete narration exercises for Chapter 1 and 2 of The Box-car Children this week. We focus on writing in complete sentences by making sure there is a subject noun and a verb.
GRAMMAR
We continue our work with classifying sentences. Scholars will be learning how to classify adverbs.
POETRY
Please help your child rehearse “Merry Autumn Days” by Charles Dickens. This week, we focus on the last four lines of stanza one.
MATH
We will be finishing up our renaming unit this week! Please practice both addition and subtraction flashcards along with the homework. You can even quiz your child in the car with quick facts! On Friday we will be having our Cumulative Test, please review the study guide coming home Thursday Night.
SCIENCE & HISTORY
We are wrapping up both the Life Cycles and Ancient India units this week with review and assessment. Study guides will be coming home Tuesday and Wednesday. The life cycles assessment will be on Thursday and the India assessment will be on Friday. Feel free to use the 20 minutes of reading time each night to study for these assessments. Don't worry! We will be studying and reviewing at school too! Your children have already worked very hard during these units and will just be asked to show what they know.
