Week 10

Hello 2B Families,

Second Quarter here we come!

If you haven't already, please sign up for Parent Conferences. These are being held next week and are mandatory. Check out the Signup here

Costume Proposals are due this Friday, October 25th. Students are allowed to come to school dressed as their favorite classical literary character, scientist, or historical figure for our annual Read-a-thon event on October 31st. Underscore classical literary character, scientist, or historical figure. Now, I understand that the term classical and literary are to some extent up to interpretation, but in this case, it does not include modern or contemporary literary characters. It usually doesn't work to make the typical Halloween costume "fit" these requirements. Although costumes do not need to come directly from the curriculum, what we study in the second grade is rich with possible costume ideas (and easy ones, too). Please see the lists below for some literary ideas. An orange form was sent home a few weeks ago. I will be sending these forms back with my approval or disapproval.
Feel free to email me with any questions or proposals!

LITERARY COSTUME IDEAS...
Fern, Wilbur, or Charlotte from Charlotte's Web
Henry, Jessie, Violet, or Benny from The Boxcar Children
Sarah from Sarah, Plain and Tall
Laura or Mary Ingalls
Chester Cricket, Tucker Mouse, or Mario from A Cricket in Times Square
Dorothy from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Heidi from Heidi
Peter, Edmund, Susan or Lucy from The Chronicles of Narnia

Here is our week:

LITERATURE
The Boxcar Children is such an endearing book! Students are enjoying it in literature circles. With each chapter of the book, students will be meeting in small groups and completing activities before reading it altogether and then discussing the text. Please encourage your child to be an active and cooperative participant in his or her literature circle. We discuss what it means to be alert, courageous, and decisive. We examine the words boxcar, stump, handkerchief, and supper.

POETRY
Scholars should be focusing on learning the first four lines of the second stanza of "Merry Autumn Days" by Charles Dickens.

SPALDING
There are 30 words this week. On Monday, we spell once, one, own, before, know, no, were, where, there, and here. Tuesday's words are dead, leave, early, close, close, flower, flour, nothing, and ground. Wednesday's words are lead, led, lead, such, morning, however, mind, shall, alone, order, and third. Please continue to dictate these words to you child for homework. Doing this really props up the methods we use to instruct in school and will help your child rely on his or her knowledge of phonograms and spelling rules.

GRAMMAR & WRITING
Second grade scholars add The Adjective Jingle to their repertoire this week. In Grammar, we also learn to classify and build sentences with adjectives. In Writing, our exemplar sentences include exclamations, and we will continue to keep track of story elements as we narrate each chapter of The Boxcar Children.

MATH
Welcome back everyone, we are beginning our Length Unit! Wednesday we are doing a fun activity with paper airplanes and measuring how far they are taking flight! If you have any spare tape measures, please send them in! They will be easier to use in measuring our flights. :)

Homework
Monday: WB, Ex. 1, Pg. 72
Tuesday: 3.1B Quiz
Wednesday: 3.2B Quiz
Thursday: WB, Ex. 2, Pg. 73-75
Friday: Addition Flashcards*

*This is a great time to do XtraMath (Log in information has been sent home. Contact me if you have any questions). You could also have your child do fact practice on MathPlayground.com. This game for, instance.

SCIENCE
This week we are starting a new unit on the water cycle. Next week we are going to learn about the states of matter (liquid, solid, and gas).

HISTORY
We begin the next unit on Ancient China. Your child will learn about the two important rivers in China, the Yangtze and the Yellow rivers, and other land features. They will also learn about Confucius and his teachings. You can ask them what Confucius says about being a good son or daughter (*wink wink*).

Have a great week!
Mrs. Dill
