Week 13

Hello 2B Families,

Welcome to Week 13! We have a full week ahead of us. Keep in mind, however, that there is no school on Veterans Day (Monday, November 11th).

We had a fantastic Read-a-thon event last Thursday! Many thanks to our classroom parents for making the class celebration memorable!
The Winter Concert is November 20th. Mark the date!
The dress attire for the concert will be as follows:
Boys: Black pants, white dress shirt, black dress shoes, and black socks.  Hair should be combed neatly.
Girls: Black skirt, white top, black tights, and black dress shoes. Hair should be pulled away from the face with no distracting adornment. Please follow the Archway Arete dress code for guidelines on jewelry.

The PSO normally has a uniform exchange to help families with putting together concert attire, but they needed to move the date of the exchange for the Prep's awesome playoff game! Unfortunately the exchange is now after the concert, Nov. 20th. If you would like to use the uniform exchange, please email Deanna Carpenter at uniformexchangepso@gmail.com

Students had a French study assignment this past week. They came home with their French notebooks, but many did not bring their notebooks back to school. Please assist! Madame Gebara will be grateful.

Here is our week:

MATH
We are finishing up our Weight Unit with learning about Pounds and Ounces! Please help your child study Wednesday night for our Cumulative Test on Thursday. Our next unit will be Multiplication! I highly encourage you to have your child work on the Xtra Math program at home! It will definitely help with fluency and confidence. :)

HW
Monday: none (due to Galileo testing in class)
Tuesday: 4.3 B Quiz Worksheet
Wednesday: Cumulative Test B Worksheet
Thursday: WB, Pg. 87-91 (evens only)
Friday: none

POETRY
We begin a new poem this week: "The Night Before Christmas." This is a lengthy poem. Students are only required to memorize two consecutive stanzas. Recitations will begin on December 16th.

LITERATURE
This week second grade scholars are reading Chapter 6 and 7 of The Boxcar Children. Our vocabulary words are hem, dam, thin, and ladle. We will discuss initiative and orderliness as it relates to the characters in our story. Ask your child what the children in our story have done thus far to make the boxcar seem more like a home.

SPALDING
We have 20 words this week. We will not have a spelling lesson on Monday due to Galileo testing. That means there will be no Spalding homework on this day. Tuesday's words are paid, laid, said, enter, railroad, unable, ticket, account, driven, real. Wednesday's words are recover, mountain, speak, past, might, contract, deal, almost, all, brought, bring.

GRAMMAR/WRITING
Students are taking a Grammar test this week. We will learn about declarative sentences and about subjects and predicates as we continue to classify sentences. We have discussed four of the parts of speech this year. Ask your child to name each part of speech and give you an example.

SCIENCE
We are continuing the study of the water cycle. This week, ask your child about different types of clouds. See if they can identify any clouds they see in the sky.

HISTORY
Our study of Ancient China continues next week. We will learn about Chinese writing and inventions. Ask your child what they thought was the most important invention from the Chinese and why. We will also learn about how silk was invented and made. Ask your child to describe the story of how silk was discovered.
