Week 14

Hello 2B Families,

Here is a word from Ms. Modisett, our wonderful 1st grade teacher and Spelling Bee coordinator:

"Dear Parents,

It is my pleasure to announce that Spelling Bee season is upon us! Your child will be participating in a class Spelling Bee during the week of November 18th. Please use the word list sent home with them on Friday to study and make sure to read over the Spelling Bee letter for important dates and details. It is not mandatory for your child to study at home, however we recommend that all children participate in the class bee! Please reach out to me at any time if you have questions or concerns.

Please see the links above for access to the letter and word list. I so look forward to hosting our class Bee this next week!

Here is our week of academics:

MATH
We are in our Multiplication Unit! This is an important time for addition fluency, so please continue to work on XTra Math, flash cards, or any other method that is useful for your child. Here is a link to Khan Academy's intro to multiplication for some light word problems: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic-home/multiply-divide/mult-intro/a/intro-multiplication

HW
Tuesday: Workbook, Exercise 1, Pg. 92-93
Wednesday: Workbook, Exercise 2, Pg. 94-95
Thursday: Workbook, Exercise 3, Pg. 96-97
Friday: Addition Flashcard Practice

POETRY
Scholar’s should have received a copy of “The Night Before Christmas” in their homework folders. Each scholar should prepare two consecutive stanzas to memorize. Please help your child prepare to recite with confidence! Recitations will begin December 16th.

LITERATURE
This week second grade scholars are reading Chapter 8 and 9 of The Boxcar Children. Our vocabulary words are stockings, clothesline, dumplings, and orchard. We will discuss determination and joyfulness as it relates to the characters in our story. It is suggested that scholars begin designing the outside of their diorama on Wednesday.

SPALDING
We have 20 words this week. We will not have a spelling lesson on Monday since there is no school on Veternan’s Day. Tuesday's words are less, event, off, of, true, truth, took, again, inform. Wednesday's words are both, heart, month, children, child, build, built, understand, follow, charge.

GRAMMAR/WRITING
Scholars learn that nouns can be singular or plural this week. They continue to build and strengthen their skills in classifying sentences.

SCIENCE
This week we will do a review and assessment of water cycles before we begin our study of insects! Ask your child to name and describe the parts of an insects body.

HISTORY
We are wrapping up our Ancient China Unit. Your child will learn about the meaning of the Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. Ask them to tell you a couple of ways that Chinese people celebrate the Chinese New Year. Look for a study guide coming home on Friday.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Dill
