Week 18

As the semester draws to a close, Archway Arete teachers are hard at work drafting narrative evaluations for each of their students. This labor of love requires many hours of intentional reflection and to facilitate this process, our teachers are given one work day to focus on writing these evals. On Tuesday, (this Tuesday, the 10th) I will be away from the classroom (but on campus) writing narrative evaluations. If you are interested in supporting our classroom during my absence and have fingerprint clearance, please email me. Thank you in advance!

MATH
We are continuing our multiplication tables this week, focusing on 3s. Please practice skip counting with your child to familiarize themselves with the pattern!

LITERATURE
This is an exciting week in literature! Second grade scholars start off the week by turning in their Boxcar Dioramas! We are looking forward to seeing all the hard work that has gone into their creation. We then review and take a final test on The Boxcar Children. On Friday, we celebrate the end of the book with a classroom celebration. Thank you to all those contributing to our celebration and making it possible.


POETRY
Scholars have one more week to prepare "The Night Before Christmas." Recitations begin on the 16th.


SPELLING

There are 30 words this week. On Monday, scholars spell except, ant, aunt, capture, else, bridge, offer, suffer, center, and front. On Tuesday, they spell running, run, rule, carry, chain, death, learn, wonder, pair, pear, and pare. Wednesday's words are check, prove, heard, hear, inspect, itself, always, something, and expect.


GRAMMAR and WRITING
Scholars have learned much about how words function in declarative sentences. This week student's knowledge on classifying sentences is put to the test. We will practice and review at the start of the week and then test near the end of the week. Ask your scholar to share with you the questions they ask when they classify adverbs and adjectives.

HISTORY
Next week we will continue our study of ancient Greece. Your child will learn about the ancient Olympics on Monday. Ask them what events people participated in back then. You can compare to the modern Olympics. We will also be studying Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Ask your scholar how each philosopher chose to teach. On Friday, we get to study the life of Alexander the Great. What made him so great?


SCIENCE
Next week we will learn about insects that glow and sing, as well as insects that are like armored tanks. What could they be? Ask your child to describe how fireflies and grasshoppers communicate as well as how an insect's exoskeleton helps them.
