Athletic Field Day is Friday, January 31st   Each year classes are assigned a Greek City State for their team.  This year, our team is Thebes, and our team color is yellow. Your child may wear a plain yellow shirt (no logos) other than class section or Greek City State and athletic pants or shorts.
Scholars should wear athletic clothing free of pop culture references.  Sports team and brand logos are acceptable on clothing.  Athletic shoes are mandatory (any color).  Hats and sunglasses may be worn.  Sunscreen must be applied at home.  Please see pg. 52 in the family handbook for more detailed information.
Lunch will be in the classroom at 11:00. Please send your child to school with a lunch. Hot lunch will not be served on Field Day.

REMINDERS
Scholars will get a new leveled reader weekly. Please have your child spend time reading this daily, and then spend time filling out their reading log. Scholars may log time spent reading other material on his or her log as well (such as Raz-kids). However, at least one entry should reflect his or her time spent reading the leveled material. Some scholars may need assistance. Try to spend time listening to your second grader read in case guidance is what he or she needs to make significant reading progress. Thank you for initialing these logs as well!

Raz-kids is a supplementary to leveled readers. This is an awesome resource! Letters were sent home two weeks ago with student login information. Please email me with any questions or for a replacement letter.

Mark your calendars:
Our second grade field trip is on Friday, March 20th to the Pioneer Living History Museum.

Here is our week of academics:

MATH
We are well into our Multiplication Unit with working on our 4s and 5s this week! It is very important to practice with your child memorizing the different fact families (counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s). The more they memorize their facts, the less stressful it will be as we head into our larger fact families!
HW
Monday: 8.1 Test B Worksheet
Tuesday: Workbook, Exercise 4, Pg. 40-41
Wednesday: Workbook, Exercise 5 and 6, Pg. 43-45
Thursday: 8.2 Test B Worksheet
Friday: XtraMath practice

POETRY
Scholars should focus on memorizing stanza four of "Smart" by Shel Silverstein. Remember, your child is working towards complete memorization of this poem by February 6th.

SPELLING
We begin cursive instruction this week. There are NO spelling words. There will be handwriting homework each evening, starting with a manuscript handwriting review and then followed by practice with cursive letters in isolation, short cursive words, and difficult cursive connections. Our introduction to cursive will extend into next week. Please be on the look-out for a packet that will help you support your child's acquisition of cursive and help you help him or her as he or she practices at home!

LITERATURE and WRITING
Scholars read Chapter 5 of Little House in the Big Woods. Our copywork this week will be a few lines of verse from Isaac Watts that are also found in Little House. We summarize "The Story of Grandpa's Sled and the Pig" as well as a passage on Sundays in the little house.

GRAMMAR
Scholars continue to practice classifying sentences with prepositional phrases. We review and prepare for a grammar test to be taken at the end of the week.

SCIENCE
Next week, we are continuing our study of the human body by learning about the excretory system. Ask your child to describe how the digestive and excretory systems work together. We will also begin a study of nutrients and a well-balanced diet.

HISTORY
Next week we wrap up the Constitution unit with a test on Wednesday. Please look for the STUDY GUIDE completed in class on Monday and sent home. For your convenience, I have added a link to the study guide. Please see it here:
