Remote Learning Week 4

Hello 2B Families,

Welcome to Week 4 of our remote learning adventure.

Thank you all for helping your child join our Google Classroom. Congratulations to all those that we able to submit work for Week 1 and 2! That was quite a task. Going forward, work for the week will be due on the first day of the following week. So, last week's work is due today if you are reading this on Tuesday because Tuesday is the first day of school this week. You are more than welcome, in fact you are encouraged, to help your child submit assignments as they are completed throughout the week. Have you noticed that you can use the camera on a phone or tablet to submit a picture of your child's work directly from the Google Classroom app? That is just one option! Let me know if you need anything while continuing to navigate and learn Google Classroom.

I hope you were able to receive all of your child's belongings and supplies this past week. Please keep hold of these items. Encourage your child to organize his or her materials is a safe and accessible place. He or she may not be using these materials this week, but going forward, they may come in handy. I am thinking particularly of the Singapore Math 2B Workbook and your child's pink Spelling/Vocabulary Notebook.

I hope you all have had a wonderful, long weekend. I can't wait to see all our 2B scholars in our Zoom meetings this week. Please look for your child's invitation via email. Remember our Zoom meetings are regularly scheduled. We have a community building meeting on Tuesday at 10:00. I am trying to formalize this meeting a bit, so that students get the most out of our time together. This Tuesday we will be making announcements and acknowledgements. Then we will be looking at the poem we would have been memorizing in class this month! We also have a tutoring session on Friday at 10:00. This is an optional meeting. Please have your child come with academic questions about the week's learning material. Ms. Cloward and I will try our best to answer everybody's questions. Hopefully we will be able to take scholars through a portion of the week's material. I am trying to put together a quick little magnet demo for this session! Our meetings are recurring, but I will send out weekly email invitations by way of reminder.

Here is our week of academics:

SPELLING
This week we are incorporating phonograms into the Spalding lesson. Scholars will focus on writing five phonograms this week. However, my daily videos linked on Google Classroom, give students oral practice with ten phonograms. Our words this week are new. They are not review. Keep in mind that scholars have not seen these words in the classroom before. I hope the videos I have produced are helpful. Here is a quick tip! During the spelling lesson video, pause the video whenever you want to give your child extra time to think or to write.

LITERATURE
Scholars will read Ch. 2 of The Cricket in Times Square. This is such an endearing story! While I wish we could be reading it together in our classroom and having interesting discussions about story elements and virtuous ideas, I know that this is a great opportunity for scholars to delve into the text untainted. Some scholars may need guidance with the reading. If possible, I encourage the text to be read aloud to scholars as they follow along. Thank you for doing your utmost!

GRAMMAR
Scholars will classify sentences this week. Please check out our Grammar Skills posters that we have been using in class this year as we have learned to analyze and parse a sentence. These could be a great resource for your child if he or she struggles to complete grammar tasks independently.

MATHEMATICS
This week, we are working with graphs and tally charts. This material is mostly new, although students were exposed to this content briefly during our Quarter 2 bellwork assignments. I am grateful for that!

Tuesday's Mental Math has scholars working with multiplication and division with 4. I recommend having your child practice skip counting by four all the way to 64 before completing this task. Have him or her write the facts down in a list as he or she counts. This list can be used to help your scholar complete the page.

Wednesday's Mental Math is work with 5. Repeat this skip counting activity but with 5 (all the way to 55).

SCIENCE
We learn about magnets this week! Do you have any magnets at home? If you do, you will want to have them handy this week. Your child does not need magnets to complete his or her work, but they will certainly enrich the learning experience!

SPECIALS
Please reach out to specialists teachers if you have specific questions regarding the material they have provided for your child this week.
